Clearwater takes the plunge with Mercedes-Benz Actros

One of the UK's leading independent waste management companies has marked a welcome return to the three-pointed star by investing more than a quarter of a million pounds in a new vacuum tanker based on a 32-tonne Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis.

The truck was supplied to Glasgow-based Clearwater by Bellshill dealer Western Commercial. An 8x4 Actros 3236K model with high-roofed sleeper cab and optional comfort suspension, it is the subject of a five-year Mercedes-Benz repair and maintenance contract.

The truck's body was built by R One Services, of Rugby – the 10,000-gallon tank carries up to 3,000 gallons of water for jetting with the remaining 7,000-gallon capacity used for waste.

In line with Clearwater’s long-standing policy, power for the vacuum and jetting unit comes from an auxiliary engine rather than the truck’s own 360hp V6 via a PTO.

Clearwater provides treatment, recycling and disposal services to industrial, commercial and municipal customers nationwide.

The company operates 26 trucks, the majority of them 32-tonners, and will shortly take delivery from Western Commercial of a second new Mercedes-Benz, this time 6x4 Actros 2648 Long Distance tractor unit.

Clearwater has also recently added a 3.5-tonne Sprinter 313CDI tipper to a fleet that also includes three Mercedes-Benz vans – another Sprinter kitted out for drain exploration and a pair of 2.77-tonne Vitos – all of which were supplied by Western last year.

“We’ve made these new investments because we have faith in Mercedes-Benz products,” commented Clearwater Managing Director Jim Pitcairn, who founded the family business in 1994.

“It's a competitive world out there and we've tried other manufacturers in the past, but with specialist vehicles you need an understanding local dealer and Western Commercial can now provide the back-up these products demand.”

Rain does not stop play… despite the deluge, Mercedes-Benz photographer Duncan Gerrie still got his pictures.
